A dog bed cover is the most-used textile in the room. It takes 12 to 14 hours of contact a day and needs washing regularly. Washing it the right way, and looking after the liner underneath, keeps the cover looking new and the foam doing its job for years.
Take the cover off first
The cover unzips all the way round on a concealed zip. Open it, slide the cover off, then lift the TPU-backed liner off the foam and set both aside. The foam itself never goes in the wash.
Don't wash the cover while it's on the foam. Wet foam takes a long time to dry and can start to smell. The point of a removable cover is that the foam stays dry.
Washing the cover
Machine wash at 30°C on a gentle or delicate cycle.
Temperature
30°C cleans the cover without wearing out the weave. Higher temperatures break down polyester fibers over time and change how the fabric feels.
Cycle
A gentle cycle means less agitation, which is the main cause of pilling and a distorted weave. You don't need a cotton or heavy-duty cycle.
Detergent
Use a normal liquid detergent, and not too much of it. Skip bleach, optical brighteners and enzyme-heavy formulas. Leftover detergent changes how the fabric feels over time.
Fabric softener
Skip it. Softener coats the fibers and changes how the weave behaves.
Drying the cover
Tumble dry on low, or dry it flat.
Low heat matters. Polyester is heat-sensitive: high dryer heat makes the fibers contract, which changes how the cover fits the foam and how it feels. Low heat takes longer but protects the cover.
If you air-dry it, lay it flat instead of hanging it. A wet linen-blend weave stretches under its own weight when hung.
Don't tumble dry on high, and don't iron it.
Caring for the liner
The liner lifts off the foam. Don't wash it: wipe both sides with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, wipe again with a clean damp cloth, and lay it flat to air-dry completely before it goes back on.
No machine, no dryer, no iron and no bleach. TPU is heat-sensitive, and the agitation of a washing machine can separate the coating from the fabric, which stops it doing its job.
After an accident
The liner is water-resistant, not waterproof, so a large spill can seep through the seams. Take the cover and liner off, blot the foam with a dry towel, and let it air-dry fully, away from direct heat, before you put everything back together. Wash the cover and wipe the liner as above.
How often should you wash a dog bed cover?
There's no fixed schedule. Wash it when it needs it: after a muddy walk, when the seasons change, or when the surface needs freshening up. The cover is made to handle repeated 30°C washes.
Between washes, a lint roller or a damp rubber glove lifts dog hair off the surface quickly. A damp cloth handles small marks without a full wash.
